Mapless in Seattle

Now don't get me wrong. I love the Emerald City. I love living here more than I thought I was capable of loving an existance. I love my college, academic bitch though it is. I love downtown, in its mess of one-way streets and snobby department stores. And I love the busses, although once in a while they totally, TOTALLY screw up your plans.

So, the plot: [info]cythereia was singing tonight at Trinity Episcopal Church, 609 8th Ave. S., downtown Sea. Now, we didn't have the address of the church at the time, so we Mapquested it. Found the address. Woop.

Now here comes the tricky part. Metro has its own mapquest-like ability and can plan your trip, from bus routes to actually getting you in the front door. However, it often doesn't account for (1)Construction (2)Streets that are "broken" into several segments (3)Hills (4)compass directions.

That's right kids. We got off the bus at the schedled stop, at 5th and Jackson, and guess what the Metro trip planner told us to do. Go South.

James and 8th, where the church is located, is actually about 5 blocks and 300 feet in elevation NORTH of Jackson. There was a stop on James, but we didn't know that's where the Church was at the time. So we hiked south, into the depths of Chinatown (literally, about another -300 feet in elevation). We got to 8th street until we could go no further because construction blocked us. That last block had 600-number addresses. So we found 605. Next to it was 611.

So after asking like a bajillion asian people who didn't know anything, we found a community center. They gave us the intersection and told us James was NORTH.

One thing I dislike about downtown Sea is that it has streets that discontinue and start up again. 8th is this way. We had to hike about 15 blocks just to net 5. Including trying to find our way around the hospital...that was FUN.

Here is a visual aid for the description-impaired:

See how we could have made it to the church in like 10 minutes? *KILLS*

We managed to make the last 20 minutes of the concert, and visit with Katie afterward. Which was awesome. But man do my legs feel like Jello.

Now to fall asleep so that I can wake up tomorrow with sore body and worse of a sore throat I've had since yesterday. I have to get sick right at the beginning of the quarter. Thanks, body, for sympathizing.
